The Hungry Heart Cafe is a socially responsible neighbourhood cafe featuring the freshest local products and many homemade specialties. As a social enterprise initiative of Stella’s Circle, the Hungry Heart Café provides training opportunities to support those who have faced barriers to successful inclusion in the community. Please visit www.StellasCircle.ca to learn more about Stella’s Circle.
We take pleasure in serving our customers with excellence in an atmosphere that is friendly and welcoming. And we proudly use all of the profits from the Cafe to support our on-site training programs.
The Hungry Heart cafe opened its doors in 2008 with a simple mission: to provide fresh, wholesome meals using local products whenever possible at an affordable price. Today, we continue to deliver on that mission, serving up interesting, inventive cuisine that puts a twist on local favorites, both in the Cafe as well as in our growing catering business.
But the Hungry Heart Cafe is so much more! It is also a culinary training program that provides workplace-based experience and learning to individuals in our community who are trying to find their way back into the workforce. We offer more than just teaching technical skills, we provide the mentorship and peer support that will enable our graduates to secure employment that is both successful and sustainable.
And we have been recognized nationally and internationally! The Hungry Heart Cafe was named Ernst & Young Social Entrepreneur of the Year in 2010, was listed in Where to Eat in Canada in 2011 and 2014 and was the recipient of TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence, 2012, 2013 and 2014! In 2014 we also received the St. John’s Board of Trade Business Excellence Award for Community Impact (Under 20 Employees).
To transform the lives of our participants through culinary arts training, instilling a love of great food and ingredients, in ways that the entire community can participate in, support and celebrate.
Stella’s Circle is named after one of Newfoundland’s pioneer social workers, Dr. Stella Burry. She believed that people who were down on their luck needed fairness – not charity.
Stella Burry was a tireless advocate for social justice at a time when the charity model was more in vogue. Why? Because she had seen first hand that those in need don’t want a handout, they want a hand up.
Stella’s Circle offers programs for adults who have barriers to full participation in the community, including poverty, homelessness, and health issues. With our help, people can – and do— change their lives for the better.
Our programs address three essential needs:
• Counselling and support for those who are attempting to return to the community following periods of incarceration, hospitalization or other marginalization.
• Affordable housing developments and programs that ensure security and stability.
• Training and skill development, literacy education and employment.
